Let's show our teacher's some love with a new lunch "respite" program

We have an urgent need for teacher help at lunch.  This is a new program that will give teachers an opportunity to step out of their classroom for 5-10 minutes at lunch.  Many teachers don't have lunch volunteers and need a few minutes to leave the class.  A volunteer is needed everyday for K-2, 3-5 and 6-8.  Please help...even once a month would make a huge difference!  Please email Michaela Jarrett at michaela@marathonlistings.com to express interest.

Treat Our Staff Notebook

(a note from Leann Poindexter, Staff Appreciation Team lead)

Did you know such a thing existed?  Are you serving as a room parent or are you a parent who would like to do something nice for a staff member and wonder “what does he/she like?”  We have the answer!!  Located in the front office, there is a large 3-ring binder located to the right of the computer where you sign in upon arrival.  Each staff member has completed a list of their favorites.  The notebook is divided into categories (Teachers, Administration, Specials, EC and support staff) and within those divisions the staff sheets are arranged alphabetically.  There are multiple copies of sheets for every staff member, so feel free to take a sheet or take a picture to save for later.  This resource is there for you and we hope you find it useful!

*If you would like more information about the Staff Appreciation Team and how you can help, please email scaparentrelations@gmail.com, and we will send your info along!

Can you help with the SCIENCE OLYMPIAD?

Middle School Dean, Mr. Jackson, is looking for a parent or a team of parents with an interest in Science!  He needs help specifically with Science Olympiad!  There is a training session that we would send the point person to, to get more direct instruction on how to support Science Olympiad at the school.

Science Olympiad is a regional, state and nationwide competition for middle school and high school students.
The students compete based on their knowledge of science and on their skill in applying problem solving to hands-on activities and labs.
At SCA we offer Science Olympiad as an afternoon year-long elective class.  Currently we have 22 students (mix of 7th and 8th grade).
The class meets every day from 2:45-3:25pm in room 216.
We are continuing our search for a 7th/8th grade science teacher, who would typically lead this elective class.

In the interim we are looking for an interested parent to help with the following aspects of Science Olympiad:
*Be the point person for Science Olympiad coaching and planning
*Attend the Coach’s conference in Raleigh Oct. 9-10 (Oct. 9th is optional)
*Plan the weekly lessons/ activities for the science Olympiad class (40min class meets 5 times a week)
*Determine what materials are needed for the activities
*Get the word out to parents of the students in the class to donate materials
*Work with Kim Jackson to purchase any needed materials
*We do have long-term substitute teachers in place who can deliver the science Olympiad lessons and work with the students, a parent coach would not need to teach the class (though it would be great if they could have input from time to time and would be welcome to be a part of the class as much as possible).

Here is the link that describes the coach’s conference Oct. 9-10, though it looks like the 9th is optional.

The coach who attends would register online with Kim Jackson’s assistance so we could cover the cost.

If you are interested, please contact Matt Jackson at 98.mjackson@nhaschools.com

Welcome back!

Hello, SCA Parents!

I cannot believe we are starting the 2015-2016 school year this week! I wanted to reach out to all of you to introduce myself, to let you know about some exciting volunteer opportunities we have available to you, and also to give you information about some new ways we’ll be communicating throughout the school year.

First, let me introduce myself. I’m Amy Schenck, and I have a 2nd Grader here at SCA. My first two years as a parent in the school I served on the SCA Council, and at the end of last school year I decided to change things up and accept the position of head of the newly created Parent Relations Team. I am looking forward to helping improve communication and awareness for the student body, parents, SCA teachers and staff, and volunteer parent teams.

We have revised the parent teams so that they are more efficient and streamlined.  The parent teams are:

Academic Enhancement. This team would work together to coordinate and form smaller teams for events such as the Spelling Bee, Science Fair, Math Competitions, Band Competitions, Cultural Arts Shows, Student Council, Yearbook, etc. We need a leader for this team.

Building and Grounds. This team is being lead by Tracey Marshall-Becker, and they handle recycling as well as other projects.

Community Relations. This team handles getting events in the news. Last year, this team also helped to secure coupons for awarding our middle schoolers on honor roll. We need a leader for this team.

Extracurricular. Kelly Williamson has agreed to lead this team. This team is responsible for coordinating and forming smaller teams for events for the whole school such as Family Movie Night, the Running and Chess Clubs, Watchdog for Dads, activities after school including such as Art, Lego, Drama, the Summerfield Charter 5k, and many others.

K-5 Events. This team is responsible for events and activities for grades K-5. We need a leader for this team.

Middle School Events. Headed up by Susan Hughes, this team is responsible for events and activities for grades 6-8.

Moral Focus. Each month, SCA has a moral focus project, and this team is instrumental in coordinating it. We need a leader for this team.

Resource Management. This team coordinates volunteers for teacher assistants, picture day, office assistants, library assistants, etc. We need a leader for this team.

Staff Appreciation. What would we do without our amazing teachers and staff? This team will be lead by Leann Poindexter this year, and they will handle activities such as staff luncheons and Staff Appreciation Week.

All of these teams need volunteers, and many of them need team leads. Please email me scaparentrelationsteam@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering or need more information.

Finally, there are some new and exciting plans to increase communication this year between the school, parents and parent teams. I have started this very basic (there is a huge learning curve I’m dealing with) blog for us. My goal is to improve it throughout the year. Currently, the blog is private and can only be read by those with access. Spread the word! I would love for everyone to have access! In addition, our first newsletter will be published by the end of September. We also hope to begin quarterly parent meetings. Good things are in the works for sure! I forgot to add that I would love to have some volunteers join me on the Parent Relations Team, as well!

Have a great first day of school this week!

Sincerely,
Amy Schenck

Parent Volunteer Opportunities

Hello SCA parents!

The SCA Foundation team currently has open and we are looking to find some parents who are interested in becoming more involved in these important functions. It's important that we hear from interested parties soon, so the Foundation is ready to kick off the school season. If you are passionate about making a difference at SCA & enjoy leading a team of like-minded parents, this is a great opportunity for you!

The SCA Foundation is a group of parents who are in charge of fundraising activities for SCA. Some of these activities included with the Foundation are the 'Invest in a Child' program, SCA spirit wear, and various SCA evenings/outings at local restaurants in the area. Since we are a 'new' school, there is plenty of opportunity for this team to improve & shape our current fundraising activities, and to create and promote new and different ways to generate funds to help provide opportunities to improve the student experience at SCA. Some of the funds which have been raised have been used to significantly improve the technology for students in the form of additional computers, as well as many extracurricular school functions.

If you are interested in leading or joining the SCA Foundation team, we want to hear from you! Please email mykpetersen@gmail.com with your contact information, and we will be glad to contact you to discuss these fantastic opportunities in greater detail.

Have a fun and safe summer!
